Volvo Creates World’s Most Advanced Public Autonomous Driving Experiment: Drive Me

Ready or not, autonomous driving is well on its way, and here at Velde Volvo, we’re proud to be able to say that Volvo is one of the leaders helping to change the automotive landscape. Recently, it launched officially the most advanced autonomous driving experience conducted in public—the Drive Me project, localized in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The experiment utilizes an autonomous Volvo XC90 SUV; these autonomous vehicles will be given to real families in Gothenburg. While Volvo currently offers semi-autonomous functionality on its 90 Series vehicles in a feature called Pilot Assist, the experiment will be quite different. Pilot Assist provides gentle steering inputs to keep the car safely within lane markings and properly aligned, the Drive Me cars will bring hands-off and feet-off capability (so, nearly full autonomous driving) in specially designated autonomous driving zones around the city.

“This is an important milestone for the Drive Me project,” said Erik Coelingh, Senior Technical Leader Active Safety at Volvo Cars, as he observed the final touches being put to the car. “Customers look at their cars differently than us engineers, so we are looking forward to learn how they use these cars in their daily lives and what feedback they will give us.” —from a 9.9.16 Volvo Cars press release

This experiment will provide invaluable information and insight into how autonomous driving is poised to affect not just our daily lives, but the landscape of the automotive world and even our physical landscapes. While we’re definitely excited to see the autonomous XC90 in action (where designated), we’re still big fans of driving it! If you’re in the market for a luxurious, reliable SUV, the award-winning Volvo XC90 makes its case beautifully. Come see us in our showroom, located on 2200 W. Pioneer Parkway, Peoria, IL, and someone from our team will answer any questions you may have before setting you up with a test drive, so come on down and try it out while the Volvo lineup still requires drivers!
